The following message is from Thomas O'Brien Academy of Science and Technology Principal Sophia Newell:
I am writing to let you know about a safety concern that came to our attention during the school day Friday.
One of our students made us aware of a list of individuals that other students in our school may have intended to harm. We immediately began an investigation and called the City School District of Albany’s threat assessment team to our building. We also notified law enforcement officials.
Our investigation has determined that there was no immediate threat Friday to any of the individuals on the list. This remains an ongoing investigation, and we will continue to work together with law enforcement officials on this matter.
We are taking appropriate disciplinary steps with all students we have found to be involved in this matter, in accordance with our Student Code of Conduct.
Safety is a priority for all of us at TOAST and throughout our school district.
I would like to commend the actions of the student who brought this matter to our attention immediately. We also want to emphasize that all of our students are safe and supported in reporting any information that makes them feel unsafe or uncomfortable. This includes any information, pictures or video they see in social media.
We ask that you remind your children that if they see something, they should tell a trusted adult immediately. Your partnership is critically important to all that we do each day to provide a safe learning environment for everyone in our school community.
