Congratulations to Albany International Academy teacher Laura Abate for her recognition as the New York State Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Member of the Month for January!
In receiving this recognition, Abate (pictured with Newcomer Program student Wail Satouf) said that becoming an English as a New Language (ENL) teacher allowed her to combine her interests in diversity and language, while also fulfilling her strong service orientation.
She noted that literacy is essential for all students, and that there is an added urgency for immigrants and refugees in order to achieve academic and career success.
